The Legend of the Twelve Chinese Zodiacs

There are many versions of the legend about the Chinese zodiac animals. There are twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac and each represents a different personality with unique abilities and strengths.

According to a common legend, the Heavenly Jade Emperor in Chinese folklore ordered that animals would be designated as calendar signs. To determine which animals will receive the honor, a race was set up where the fastest twelve animals that went through the finish line will earn their respective places in the zodiac.

The clever rat got up very early and rushed toward the finish line. On the way, he encountered the ox that ran much faster. In order not to fall behind, he persuaded the straightforward ox carry him on condition that he sang for the ox. At last, the ox and rat arrived at the finish line. The ox thought that he would be the first to finish, but the rat had already slid in front, becoming the first lucky animal of the Chinese zodiac.

What are the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac in order? Following Rat and Ox, are Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
